This year’s Split Summer Festival will confront, at a distance of a few hundred metres separating the Carrara Square from the Peristyle, King Ubu and St. Domnius. On the one hand, a “brutal buffoon” in the Diocletian’s Palace where numerous flags have changed throughout history, as well as Jarry’s rulers, and on the other hand Bajamonti’s St. Domnius, whose relics are translated from Solin to Split, thus establishing the heavenly patron of the town. The patron saint and the cruel buffoon – as though all the painful dilemmas of these times were embodied in this contrast: Domnius’ sacrifice reveals the trust and hope that, in spite of everything, this world will not be overruled by an ubuist, all-destroying nihilism. That all the painful faces of this world, such as the hopeless loneliness of T. Williams’ hero in The Night of the Iguana, remain just one side of reality whose other side is an all-redeeming power of the feminine love in Norma, or a powerful faith of the community in Nabucco.
The idea that this world has not lost its roots and that Ubu is not its only option is revealed by the concert programme in which the criteria of diversity is characterised by ethno-folk traits in the broadest and most positive sense. It is not a literal quoting of something that might be folklore, but on the contrary, a highly artistic and academic perception of ethno and folk elements. Nowadays, when we are witnesses of every kind of globalisation, either justified or unjustified, somewhere deep inside we feel the need to return to primordial, simple, and native elements in music. In this spirit and with such motive arrive our guests from Ireland, Italy, England, Monaco, Russia, Israel, Sweden, Cuba and America, together with Croatian musicians.
Besides many dramatic and dancing guest performances with “Russian themes” – like the great Kirov Ballet of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, or Tolstoy’s drama Anna Karenina performed by the ZKM – it is worth to mention two ballet openings, which use human body to express sufferings of man in these conflicting times.
In Bajamonti’s dramatic oratorio, the relics of St. Domnius are translated from Solin to Split assisted by Croatian Duke Lobel and innocent children. We are taking the opposite road, returning from the vicinity of Cathedral, where his relics lie, to the starting point – to Gospin Otok at Solin, a sacred place of Croatian faith and history.
