ORISSA je savezna država u Indiji koja se prostire uz Indijski ocean, smještena
između obale Bengalskoga zaljeva i visoravni Chota Nagpur. U njoj je
tijekom vremena nastajala književnost, najprije sanskrtska, pa budistička
na prakrtu, a zatim se u njoj razvio novoindijski jezik orija,
srodan bengalskom i asamskom. U budističkim pjesmama Caryā,
sačuvanim u nepalskom rukopisu iz XII. stoljeća, koji se smatra
najstarijim tekstom bengalske književnosti, povjesničari orijske književnosti
često vide najstarije djelo bengalske književnosti. Otprilike istom
vremenu ili stoljećima koja neposredno
slijede pripadaju i druge rane pojave orijskog jezika u natpisima i kroničarskim
zapisima u hramovima i u pojedinačnim sačuvanim pjesničkim tekstovima u
kojima se osjećaju jaki tragovi usmene narodne književnosti. PLESNU AKADEMIJU ORISSA, jednu od vodećih kulturnih institucija u Orissi, vodi guru Gangadhar Pradhan. Osnovana 1975. godine, ta je akademija odigrala značajnu ulogu u širenju i promicanju umjetničkih formi plesa i glazbe iz Orisse i u njoj su odgajani brojni umjetnici koji su popularnost stekli u Indiji i inozemstvu. Ona blisko surađuje s raznim kulturnim institucijama u Indiji, Kanadi, Nizozemskoj i u SAD-u te, nastavljajući bogatu kulturnu tradiciju, jača kulturne veze i prijateljstva na međunarodnome planu. Uz pomoć i podršku mnogih državnih i privatnih organizacija ta institucija, smještena u velebnom zdanju Konark Natya Mandap, organizira ugledne festivale, seminare i simpozije, a bavi se i različitim kulturnim istraživanjima i prezentacijama promičući folklornu umjetnost a osobito onu iz Orisse. Ono što je razlikuje od ostalih sličnih institucija njezina je organizacija izgrađena na načelima ugledne edukativne tradicije Guru Kula Ashrama. GURU GANGADHAR PRADHAN (1948.) rođen je u mjestu Parikul (Indija). Već od šeste godine počinje učiti umjetnost indijskih tradicionalnih plesova kod brojnih proslavljenih učitelja plesa te dobiva stipendiju Indijske vlade. I sam postavši uglednim odgajateljem mnogih generacija plesača koji su ga proslavili u zemlji i inozemstvu, guru Gangadhar Pradhan dolazi na čelo čuvene Plesne akademije Orissa, koja u svojim odjelima u raznim djelovima Indije, te u Kanadi, Nizozemskoj i u SAD-u njeguje tradicionalne plesne, vokalne i instrumentalne forme kao što su Odissi, Gotipua, Chhow i Pala. Ostvario je iznimno uspješne koreografije brojnih plesnih drama, Odissi baleta i Rasa plesa. Svoje umijeće predstavio je publici u Francuskoj, Italiji, Njemačkoj, Velikoj Britaniji, Danskoj, Rusiji, Izraelu, SAD-u, Kanadi, Južnoj Americi itd. Surađivao je s mnogim uglednim akademijama u zemlji i inozemstvu te ostvario brojne produkcije na filmu, u kazalištu te na televizijskim postajama Kanade, Japana i SAD-a. Dajući golem doprinos promicanju turizma u Indiji, organizator je mnogobrojnih festivala indijskoga plesa i glazbe te velikoga broja seminara i simpozija na teme scenskih umjetnosti i tradicionalnoga folklora. Dobitnik domaćih i međunarodnih nagrada i priznanja u Danskoj, Kanadi i SAD-u (među ostalima Državne akademske nagrade Sangeet Natak, Nacionalne nagrade Sanjukta Panigrahi, nagrade Sanskrti Bharatee u John F. Kennedy Centre of Performing Arts, Washington, itd.), guru Gangadhar Pradhan je prvi predavač umjetnosti i kulture Orisse na uglednom američkom sveučilištu u Cornellu. Prijevod D. Established in 1975 in the temple city of Bhubaneswar, Orissa Dance Academy conducts sustained training classes both for Indian and foreign students in its premises. It has won laurels for its glorious achievements in projecting and popularising Odissi Dance and Odissi Music in the country and abroad. Apart from composing new choreographies, dance dramas and ballets based on Odissi dance, folk dance forms of the region are also composed in Orissa Dance Academy under the inspiring guidance of Guru Gangadhar Pradhan who is a teacher, performer, choreographer and mardal player of high calibre. Innumerable performances by the reportoire of the Academy regaled the national and international audience stretching from remote villages of Orissa to glamorous capital cities of the world. Orissa Dance Academy has achieved a marvellous goal by creating Konark Natya Mandap. Representing the glorious "Gurukula Parampara" of India this unique venue has become the sanctum sanctorum of Orissa art and culture. Discharging the stupendous task of enabling the heritage of Orissa to reach the globe and achieve universal amity and brotherhood through discoursement of performing arts, Konark Natya Mandap is transforming the aims objectives of Orissa Dance Academy into reality. One of the distinct features of Konark Natya Mandap is the Konark Dance and Music Festival, which apart from providing entertainment, aims to generate a socio cultural awareness in the minds of people of the rural areas and also to inspire and guide the young talents in the field of art and culture. If Konark Natya Mandap is the right hand, Chandrasekhar Kalamandir is the left hand of Orissa Dance Academy. Based above the waters of the superb Chilika lake at Parikula Nilakanthapur, Bramhagiri, Puri this institution promotes young talents from the rural areas in Odissi dance and Odissi music. It also provides ample scope for the rural people to be familiar with the classical performing art tradition of Orissa. The Academy has sponsored and maintained close links and affinity with dance institutions spreading in and out of the geographical boundary of Orissa and also across the oceans. Its branches are working in Guwahati in Assam, Anand in Gujrat, Toronto in Canada, Amsterdam in Holland and South California in USA. Upholding the rich cultural heritage, the Academy has been moving ahead with its noble and dynamic mission to embrace everybody under the sun to build a world wide cultural amity and harmony.
