Choreographer's
word
Working on „Romeo & Juliette“ was a very exciting period of time for me
filled with many surprises. It seemed to me like the most difficult task
for someone working in the theatre. An author, for example Thomas Mann,
writes approximately one page a day. A choreographer manages about 30
seconds a day. This time it was different. After finishing my concept I
started working on the movements. This took me very little time. Why?
Because the literary and musical originals are entirely unflawed! On one
hand this is a great help, on the other hand it is an enormous task to
do
Shakespeare’s & Prokofiev's great originals justice. Although the
creative process took very little time, the rehearsals with the dancers
took much longer. This drama doesn’t need “Primaballerinas” and
“Danseurs-Noble” but actors that can express feelings with their bodies
and can tell a story. It was a long and difficult working process to
achieve this. The audience musn’t admire what they see on stage but has
to become entirely absorbed in it. To be witty with humour, deeply
emotional and strong with a sword in the hand
at the same time, has very little to do with the Sylphides and Willis of
the Romantic Period. Split is an awe-inspiring city full of vital
history. Having worked with the city’s ambitious and well lead ballet
company I am looking forward to witnessing the performances of my ballet
in the environment of the atmospheric Peristil and later in Split’s
imposing opera house. “Only those who move the heart will change
the world”. This is the goal
I am trying to achieve and I am wishing us all an exciting theatrical
experience.
Youri Vamos
Youri Vàmos belongs to rare
European choreographers who follow the tradition of full-length ballet
with determination. His interpretations are inventive, with a sense of
humor and with a very deep sense of drama and music. He is much more
attracted by so called classical ballets, above all due to the geniality
of their music, but also for their drama context. The fact that hundred
years ago classical ballet could not express completely psychological
and character variety of main performers presented enough motivation for
Vamos to create revised versions of well-known plays. However, he always
stays faithful to the classical heritage as foundation for his art.
His artistic credo in presenting in contemporary way traditional topics
is an obvious reason for his everlasting success in Deutsche Oper am
Rhein. This big Ballet Company, expressing for years famous Vamos
signature, has proved itself at numerous guest performances and
constantly sold out ballet evenings in Düsseldorf and Duisburg. Thus it
is no surprise that in the recent edition of History of Ballet of 20th
Century Vamos was proclaimed probably the best choreographer-narrator of
our times.
Year 2006 in a ballet way represented Vamos’ introduction with Slovenia
and Croatia. Ballet Coppelia from Montmartre was the first Youri Vamos
ballet performed recently in Croatian National Theater Ballet in Zagreb
(premiere, October 27, 2006), and Vamos’ choreography of Romeo and
Juliet (based on Shakespeare’s play and Sergey Prokofiev’s music) was
performed in Slovenian National Theater in Ljubljana (February 11, 2006)
and both of these performances were very well received by both the
public and the critics, as for choreography courage and inventiveness,
and for quality performances.
